Its inhabitants are called "vaillérands and vaillérandes".
At the intersection of the valleys… The abbot Jean-François Gonthier whom, at the end of the XIXth century was interested in the History of Notre-Dame d’Hermone, started to have a closer look at the origin of the name Vailly.
When then discover that this wording comes from the latin term
Valliacum, which means domain of Vallius (name of a roman citizen that settled in our valley)
That takes the History of the village back to the Roman Empire. By the way, this scenario is appealing since coins dating back from the Roman period were found in the surroundings of Reyvroz and we know that a secondary road probably existed between Thonon and the col de Jambaz (commune of Bellevaux).
However, the dictionary of the Duchy of Savoy, published in 1840, offers a more plausible scenario. As a matter of fact, until the XVIIth century, our village was mentioned under the name Vallier, wording that comes from Ad Valles/ Ligara Valles (at the intersection of the valleys). The geographical situation of Vailly, in between the valleys of Lullin (or the Follaz) and the Bellevaux Valley, makes this version quite believable.
